The enchanting Piazza di Spagna is one of the great tourist centre of Rome. You’ll enjoy the atmosphere of this great, open air meeting hall. The square takes its name from the 16th century palazzo di Spagna, the Spanish embassy to the Holy see. The famous Spanish Steps leading to the French church of Trinità dei Monti dominates the other side of the piazza where the fountain of the Barcaccia, by Pietro Bernini is located. The square and surrounding streets are the fashion district of Rome, where the high quality brands boutiques are located. Your private walking tour will continue to reach the majestic Fountain of Trevi, the most monumental and best known Roman fountain: one of the main symbols of the city. There you’ll toss a coin into its water to assure a return visit to Rome. We cross the Corso, the most central street of Rome moving to Piazza Colonna, one of Rome busiest squares, to admire the column of Marcus Aurelius, carved with the episodes of his wars against the Germans. The Palazzo Chigi, headquarters of the President’s Council of Ministries, is on the west side of the square. We’ll continue to Piazza Montecitorio, where the seat of the Chamber of Deputies, Italian Parlamento is located. The square is decorated with the obelisk of Psammeticus II, brought to Rome by Emperor Augustus and used as the gnomon of his sundial. From here a few more steps will take us to the Pantheon, where we may experience a cup of the best Italian coffee, before entering one of the wonders of the world. The Pantheon is defined as one of the most beautiful and perfect architecture ever created by the human beings, and it’s the best preserved ancient Roman building too. We’ll walk along the Pantheon side to reach the piazza Minerva and explore the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where exquisite works of art by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo and Bernini are hidden. |
