May 1st: Labour Day

Fava Beans
We love this national holiday called Workers' Day, or primo Maggio. We don’t work, the most of the attractions are closed It’s one of the great occasion for  picnic or big outdoor lunch with family and friends.
Must have food is ‘fave e pecorino’: Fava beans and Pecorino cheese, very tasty… a bite of pecorino cheese and a bean while chatting and having fun and wine.
On May 1,the big happening is the free concert in front of the Basilica of San Giovanni.it is a great musical event attended by thousands of people. It is organized by the trade unions.
It starts around 2pm and finishes around midnight, with many local and international artists playing throughout. The crowd is enormous, very young and enthusiastic. If you are not attending the concert, I suggest avoiding the area.

Rome's Birthday: April 21

Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC. We have a very long history! For us April 21st is quite an holiday: the ‘Natale di Roma’.

Each year we celebrate in the morning with an historical parade that start in the Circus Maximus, proceed along the Foro Boario, at the bottom of the Capitol, reach Venezia square and then it winds along via dei Fori Imperiali to the Colosseum and back along via di San Gregorio to the Circus Maximus.

Practically  the same route of the ancient triumphal processions but in reverse.

How to Get the Tickets for a Papal Audience

2/11/2017

Comments

First of all tickets for all Papal ceremonies are issued free of charge. If some agencies or guides charge you for the ticket they are dishonest and against the spirit of the Pope.

To attend a Papal Audience the ticket is required but not compulsory for individuals. Pilgrims and groups write the Prefecture of the Papal Household ahead of time to advise of their participation, hence their name will be listed and they will be introduced to the Pope. A precise info is also needed to place the correct number of seats in the square.
However if you don't have the chance to get a ticket ahead of time you can join the audience entering the square even when the Audience has already started.
I've done it several times with guests that expressed the desire just on the touring day.

How to get the tickets
Below there are different options:
Contact
The Prefecture of the Papal Household
or
Santa Susanna American Community in Rome.
Get your ticket the day before asking the swiss guards in saint Peter square or at Sant Anna gate.

The Keyhole

The famous Keyhole is located in a gateway leading to the Knights of Malta  gardens in piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta on the Aventine hill in Rome.
The  square was designed by the famous architect and painter Giovan Battista Piranesi, a 18th century  famous architect and engraver also known for his
romantic etchings depicting Rome,  who also realized  the palace and  the small church called Santa Maria del Priorato, both within the extraterritorial properties.
The beautiful and impressive square has splendid decorations rich in obelisks and military trophies full of symbols and
references and the famous doorway with the keyhole.

Porta Portese Street Market

12/23/2012

Comments

Every Sunday morning in the trastevere roman neighborhood is held the traditional streetmarket of Porta Portese.
Today while going to meet Margaret and her family I stopped for a coffee and was pleased by the animated atmosphere...

It's very alive and you can really find every kind of stuff there. Even pickpockets!
In any case it's worth a visit

and drink from the upper spurt

Just a couple of days ago I was touring together with a family and noticed that the  kids were not feeling secure to drink tap water from the street fountains because they believed it wasn’t good.

This is true in many places in the world were the taste of tap water is not enjoyable…but not in Rome!

Rome public water is good, healthy, fresh and absolutely safe. We have now a 23 centuries old tradition of public water that we still are very proud of.
The first roman aqueduct was built around 320 before Christ by Appio Claudio Ceco the roman magistrate in charge of public works back then. He also had the Old Appian way realized. Since then, wherever the roman were expanding their domains they were  providing their new provinces with roads, aqueducts and sewer systems.

Today you can find many fountains in the city and, unless it’s written ‘non potabile ‘(not potable), that is fresh and free good water for you to enjoy.

The traditional fountains are named ‘nasone’ -big nose-, and provide an easy way to drink without getting wet.
The pictures on the side will explain you how. While in Rome buy just a plastic bottle of water and then constantly fill it at the street fountains.
Of course my young friends ended up appreciating the quality of Roman water and its taste!
